Alicia Diaz y su hortalizas

Conozco a Alicia desde el ano 1998, cuando llego a la Florida proveniente de New York, ella vino a vivir al edificio #22 de Hillcrest East, del cual yo era empleada en ese tiempo. Eventualmente cambie de trabajo, pero siempre mantuvimos comunicacion. Hoy les escribo acerca de ella, ya que esta siendo hostigada por algunos miembros de su comunidad. Alicia es una mujer dominicana de tez oscura, tiene 61 anos de edad y la acompana su madre de 87 anos, quien goza de buena salud física , pero que lamentable mente padece del mal del alzheimer. A Alicia le encanta la naturaleza, para ella un pedazo de tierra significa un lugar para sembrar. El edificio donde ella vive colinda con un campo de golf, existe un área de maleza y arboles sin cuidar propiedad del campo de golf, esta área queda en la parte de atrás del edificio y en el camino a la piscina. Hace 5 anos que ella comenzo su proyecto de limpieza y abono, a esa parte de maleza y basura, que es propiedad del campo de golf, ella poco a poco lo limpio de escombros, compro tierra negra y se dedico a cultivar diferentes hortalizas y arboles que producen frutos: tiene papayas, tomates, gandules, habas, fruit pasion, raddish. A esta tarea de cuidar y limpiar se ha unido su señora madre. A algunos vecinos del edificio les comenzo a molestar verla trabajar allí, lo primero que cuestionaron era si ella era propietaria del apartamento donde ella radica, y luego la acusaron de causar disturbio de la forma ruidosa en la que ellas hablan ( madre e hija). El problema radica en que ellas mantienen sus conversaciones en español y estos vecinos solo hablan en ingles, lo cual les crea molestia y van y se quejan en la oficina del complejo. Estos vecinos están pidiendo que se le prohiba a Alicia que siga cultivando sus hortalizas en dicha área. Al conocer esta historia rápidamente yo lo pude identificar como un asunto de discriminacion, tanto por su color de piel como por el idioma que habla. Con maldad, han llegado al extremo de dañarle su sembradio, la han hostigado al punto de que ella vive nerviosa y asustada de que le dañen sus hortalizas que con tantos esfuerzo, empeno y dinero ella ha invertido allí. Me llama la atención y me pregunto: Alicia usa de sus energías físicas para limpiar un lugar lleno de escombros y basuras, por los ultimos 5 anos los propietarios del campo de golf saben de su existencia y lo que ella esta haciendo en el lugar, ella no dana la propiedad, por el comtrario usa de sus recursos económicos para comprar y abona esas tierras, las mantiene limpia de basura y escombros, a la misma vez que le da una buena oportunidad a ella y a su mama de desarrollar una actividad fisica sana, sin hacer ningun tipo de daño a los vecinos ni al entorno.
